                	Pinyin and 37 Sounds
                    Pinyin means "joining together sounds" in Chinese pronunciation. It is used to majority of Chinese teaching materials to help study Mandarin Chinese. A Chinese character has only one syllable which may consist of an initial (consonant) and a final (vowel). The system uses 37 symbols to represent the Mandarin 37 sounds which are 21 consonants and 16 vowels. They can be combined together to create about 420 different sounds. For example, the word “China” expressed in pinyin is: zhōngguó “zhōng” means middle. The initial is “zh” and final is “ōng”. “guó” means country. The initial is ““g” and final is “uó”.
